Cover Letter


We are seeking to hire a part time Pastor of Care and Connecting at First Reformed Church in Zeeland, MI.  First Reformed Church is a 173 year old institution that was founded by a Dutch community that banded together in order to create a new church in the United States.  Since then we, as a community, have weathered a variety of storms and yet continue in the same mission of our predecessors: that everyone may come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ by making disciples who make disciples.  


First Reformed has a strong culture, staff team, and membership.  We are filled with good and faithful people who are looking to represent Christ in all we do and to help our neighbors find the love and grace of Christ.  We long to see West Michigan transformed into a place that more fully represents the kingdom and that works collaboratively to see everyone live into their unique call, be it to a ministry, and mission field, or a marketplace.


We are looking to fill a highly important position and long to find someone who will help us care for one another better as well as help us stay connected in this season and seasons to come.  We are seeking an ordained pastor (as either a Commissioned Pastor or Minister of Word and Sacrament) or someone who is able to become ordained/commissioned.  The Pastor of Care and Connecting will be the primary leader in pastoral care and connecting at First Reformed.  However, we do not expect this person to be the sole carer/connector; instead, we want them to build and equip teams of impassioned individuals who carry out the work.  As Ephesians 4:12 reminds us, the role of a pastor is ‘to equip the saints for ministry.’


In regards to care, we want someone to spur and empower pastoral care and our pastoral care system within the church.  We have a network of Pastoral Elders and Care Shepherds who we want fully equipped and mobilized for ministry.  A successful candidate will be able to build teams, have a pastoral heart, and equip others to join them in ministering to those around them.  


In regards to connecting, we are looking for someone who can help all members feel accepted and engaged into the life of the community at First Church.  This person will help champion how we ‘enfold’ guests, newcomers, and seasoned members into the life and rhythms at First, as well as help build teams and processes that enable us to more fully create hospitable spaces that engage with those outside the church.

Position Description

The Pastor of Care and Connecting will provide primary leadership to the care and connection systems of First Reformed Church in order to further First Reformed Church’s mission of bringing people to saving faith in Jesus Christ by making disciples who make disciples,

Personal Qualifications:

  • Be a growing disciple of Christ and engaged in regular spiritual disciplines and practices

  • Desire to know and connect with the community at First Reformed

  • Be passionately and excitedly in love with Christ and the church

  • Communicate effectively with staff, leaders, and the congregation at large

  • Model integrity, responsibility, and an excellent work ethic

  • Be passionate about bringing people to a saving faith in Jesus Christ

  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities

  • Committed to the standards of the Reformed faith, as well as First Reformed Church of Zeeland’s philosophy of ministry and policies

Ministry Responsibilities

  • Champion the Pastoral Care system at First Reformed Church, as described in the cover letter

  • Champion the Enfolding processes at First Reformed Church, as described in the cover letter

  • Be an active and engaging presence within the community at First Reformed, both inside and outside the church

  • Recruit, train, and build effective ministry teams

  • Share preaching responsibilities as requested with Lead Pastor, between 4-12 times a year

  • Find ways to help foster lay leadership involvement throughout the life of First Reformed Church

  • Exert pastoral leadership that adjusts to the current needs of the congregation and the prompting of the spirit

  • Seek to engage with unchurched/dechurched people

  • Collaborate with other ministry leaders, inside and outside of First Reformed Church

General Expectations:

  • Be a positive role model with your life and words - radiate enthusiasm and live with integrity

  • Invest in relationships with ministry leaders and volunteers

  • Get to know the community

  • Be regularly available to staff, leaders,and members through established office hours

  • Be familiar with and follow the guidelines of the First Reformed Church Protection Policy

  • Be committed to personal development of self as a leader through ongoing training and professional development

  • Be an ordained pastor (Commissioned or MoWS) in the RCA or able to become so

  • Consider an average ministry week to be 20 hours, recognizing that hours will fluctuate through ministry seasons, and will often include evenings, weekends, and some travel

  • Be accountable to the Administrative Consistory through the Pastor under an Accountable Leadership Model

  • Meet on a regular basis with the Lead Pastor for review, support, and encouragement and have a formal evaluation once a year

  • Be an active member of First Reformed Church, along with family (if applicable)

  • Take a weekly Sabbath

Position Status: Part-time, approximately 20 hours a week
